Gentoos
are a common sight on the islands around the antarctic, including
South Georgia and the Falkland Islands themselves.
It is estimated that there are some 300,000 breeding pairs, whose
nests
are usually made from a circular pile of stones and can be quite large,
20 cm high or as can be seen in these photos by divots in the ground
which were being built up with sticks and twigs.
If
you think this poor fellow looks a little depressed you'd be right!
After 5 trips back and forth to build up his nest, his partner went
for a walk and the twigs blew away.
